Sunset Point

Sunset Point

The summer monsoon rains arrive. Tokyo turns to a humid sweat filled unbearable city.  The gaijin families flee to the mountains of Gunma, Karuizawa. Here we spend our summers, playing tennis, riding biciycles, visit each others' cottages and summer homes. Many of us ascended upon a mountain peak to pull all nighters, pushing our bicycles up to the peak.  We would haul firewood, blankets, barbecue grills, beer, and spend the night stoking a fire until the night melts away and gives  to daylight. We called this place "SUNSET POINT"

For those who have been to Sunset Point, or spent a summer(s) you will recognize the structure in the photo.  It overlooked USUI Pass where Mt. Asama was to our right and beyond, Shiga Kogen. The sundial adjacent to the structure welcomed us back year after year.

Looking beyond, as the sun rises, many of us flock to the binoculars mounted on a tripod. Inserted our 100 Yen coins to peer thru the power full lens.

The Usui Bypass, a long windy, dangerous winding road  that takes us from the foot of the mountain to Karuizawa situated 1,300 meters above sea level.  Hereunder I got a pic of Usui Bypass thru a 300mm telephoto lens
